Already feeling nostalgic about Cannes? Worry no more, Semaine and MUBI are here to make you ease smoothly into Monday. Sit back and relax. You are on the French Riviera, it’s 1954. In the warmth of the mid summer you are seated at the restaurant of the Carlton Hotel in Cannes. The south of France is resplendent. A soft breeze is filtering through the open windows. The moon is reflecting on the sea, in the distance, you can hear the crickets singing.
In the corner, your gaze stops at a table, a man sits with two women, both of them wearing rivers of diamonds. Meet our heroes of this week.
John Robbie (Carry Grant), a reformed jewellery thief’s tranquil retirement is disturbed by a series of mysterious burglaries in Nice and Cannes. Would the famous cat be on the prowl again? To clear his name, he is set to catch the thief himself. He decides to get closer to the probable next victims. Using his charms and looks he sits with the young, glamorous, wealthy - and bored - American heiress Frances (Grace Kelly) and her larger than life mother Jessie. But it seems that Frances is not as naive as he would think.
Let Iconic Grace Kelly - in her final film with Hitchcock - and charismatic Cary Grant, take you on a ride down the winding roads of the Cote d’Azure. “If you love life, you’ll love France” as the opening scene shows. We couldn’t agree more.
